Multi-Flex™ Utility Grid Technology
Peak Load Management, Load Following, and Time-shift The Multi-Flex™ system is scalable and upgradeable to power ratings from 1MW to 50MW and above. Energy storage capability can range from 1 to 5 hours or more. Modules can be scaled to size and added for more power capacity and longer run times. Systems can be installed quickly and in portable modules if desired. Energy discharge can vary according to load requirements, and charging can occur any time of day and at varying rates.
Reserve Capacity, Supply Capacity, and T&D Upgrade Deferral
For reserve Capacity, a Redundant Array of Inexpensive Batteries can serve as Spinning Reserves, responding within 10 seconds to energy demand requirements. Given the capabilities of battery storage, the Multi-Flex™ system can serve as Supplemental Reserve and Backup Supply as well. Scalability and upgradeability allow a system to change with dynamic market needs. Systems can perform Supply Capacity firming, and with appropriately sized and located systems, may allow a deferral of upgrades to Transmission and Distribution (T&D) systems.
Frequency Regulation, Voltage Support, Transmission Support, and Area Regulation
The Multi-Flex™ system can integrate with any combination of storage devices, including ultracapacitors and advanced Li-ion batteries. These systems can provide sufficient power to provide frequency regulation, voltage support, Transmission & Distribution Support, and Area Regulation.
Wind, Solar, and other Alternative Energy Support With low-cost battery storage, wind energy can be stored off-peak to be used during periods of peak demand. Similarly, energy storage can smooth solar output, providing energy during transitions between clouds or during periods where the sun is not shining. This ability can also allow Capacity Firming for the variable Wind and Solar generation and smooth grid integration. Regardless of the alternative energy source, low-cost energy storage can often improve operations.
